The Garden Share Working Group’s next meeting is Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Toni Wiedenbacher’s Home and Garden form 6-8PM. It will be a POTLUCK.

Jill Emerson has been using her expertise working with Toni to convert her garden space into something really special. Below is the subject of the meeting from Jill.

“Only modern man would be so foolish as to make something that had only a single purpose – every element nature creates around us is rich with stacked functions.  Perhaps this is one of many facets of our degraded relationship with Mother Earth, as single-function tools or spaces are inherently less sustainable. One of the single-minded approaches that we might hold toward our vegetable gardens is the idea of productivity being the sole virtue.

At the May Garden Share Meeting Toni and I will explore the spiritual resonance our gardens and outdoor spaces have for us, and how to honor and enhance this gift. With our commitment to mimicking nature’s stacked functions, we propose to explore this through: creating park-like open spaces that minimize lawn mowing; adding garden benches to encourage contemplation; creating beds that soak up and store water (mulched hugel kulture); the inclusion of edible native plantings outside of the fenced garden; plus the use of Feng Shui and dowsing in the landscape.”

Toni’s address is 297 Meads Mountain Road.  From the village green you turn on to Rock City Road and go past the cemetery. Keep going until you cross  Glasco Turnpike.  The road now is now called Meads Mountain Road. Continue up the hill almost to the top where the K.T.D. Buddhist Monastery. Our next meeting night is scheduled April, I have scheduled a guest named Brooke Pickering-Cole, from the recently formed Hudson Valley Farm Hub. We will need someone to volunteer their home for that meeting.

Dona Crawford has been the Master Gardener coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Ulster County for the past twelve years. She lives in a pine forest and is slowly converting some of it into woodland gardens. She will be talking about Cornell Resources.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday September 14th from 6-8pm at Eeo Stubblefield’s Home and Garden. It will be a POTLUCK dinner.

This will be our second meeting at her garden. She will give us a tour and will offer a new perspective as we approach the fall.

She will share her knowledge on permaculture design, the five permaculture zones, making compost and making soil.

After dinner, there will be a fire and we will roast marshmallows.

Permaculture for Home and Garden

In this talk participants will learn Permaculture principles as applied in temperate homes and gardens. We will discuss beyond organic gardening, building with local natural materials, ecological lawn, meadow, stream and wetland care, orchards and forest gardens, composting, off-the-grid water systems, and domestic and wild animal management.

Bring questions about your garden and home and be prepared to learn about ideas that can improve your quality of life, simplify your needs, and increase your family time. By cooperating with ecological processes you create real abundance and diversity in your life.

Andrew Faust has been teaching about permaculture for nearly two decades, in rural settings along the East Coast and in Brooklyn, where he adapted his ideas to urban living through the Center for Bioregional Living. He has lived off the grid for eight years in West Virginia, where he designed and built a permaculture-inspired homestead including a 1,600 square foot straw-bale house.

The address is 24 Wardwell Ln. Directions: take route 212 E. towards Saugerties. We are the street after Plochman Lane, a left turn off of 212. We are the third house on the right, the one with all the firewood on the lawn. Please park on the street and bring food and dishes for a potluck.
