Garden Share Meeting, Thursday October 9th

Hi Garden Share Members,
Our next meeting will be Thursday October 9, 2014. It is a POTLUCK from 6-8pm at the home and garden of Craig and Katryna Barber. The address is 23 SIMMONS DRIVE  IT IS OFF ROCK CITY ROAD,  JUST PAST THE WILD ROSE AND THE OLD KENCO PLACE. PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED  TO CARPOOL AS PARKING IS TIGHT.   PLEASE DON’T PARK ON NEIGHBORS’ LAWNS.  679-0779 IS THEIR PHONE NUMBER.
Looking forward to next spring, local organic farmer since 1988, Jay Armour from Four Winds Farm, has been invited to be the guest at our October meeting. Many of you have met him at The Woodstock Farmers’ Market and will now have the chance to talk more with him and get information about his “non-tilling” method and unique composting technique.  The paragraph below is from his website, http://users.bestweb.net/~fourwind/index.html:

“Organic Produce from Your Own Backyard”

Four Winds Farm is a 24 acre diversified organic farm located in Gardiner, in southern Ulster County, of which 4 acres are used to grow vegetables, primarily heirloom and open pollinated varieties for better flavor and for seed saving. The remainder is used to raise beef, which supplies us generously with natural fertilizer. Our farm-generated manure compost allows us to grow vegetables using a method that is very different from conventional farms. Our garden space is NEVER plowed or rototilled. We grow our vegetables in permanently formed beds, some of which have been in place for 18 years. We then spread compost on top of the beds, and plant seeds and transplants directly into the compost. The plant roots and compost nutrients move down into the soil where there is a healthy, thriving community of soil organisms. We find that this technique reduces overall weed pressure and gives us better-tasting vegetables that keep longer in the refrigerator. We also believe that our way of farming is better for the Earth because we are less dependent on energy- and capital-consuming tractors and equipment.

September 11th Meeting at Claudia Hirsch’s B&B

The location for our September 11th meeting with our guest, Ustya  Tarnwsky http://www.ustya.net  is at Claudia Hirsch’s home at her B&B called Enchanted Manor of Woodstock from 6-8pm.  It is off Zena Road near the Maverick Health Center.  Though technically in Woodstock, the address for GPS purposes is 23 Rowe Rd, Kingston NY 12401.  These are the directions that appear on her website, http://www.enchantedmanorinn.com

WNYT adds a new Working Group

Hello Everyone!  WNYT has just inaugurated a new Working Group.  It is called  “Green Stories to the Rescue” and it has been initiated by Jana Smith.  Jana is a story teller extraordinaire and has been using the power of stories to change people’s lives for years.  Let Jana and Green Stories come to your rescue!

August meeting at Melody Newcombe’s home and garden

On Thursday August 14, 2014 from 6-8PM the Garden Share group  will be revisiting Melody Newcombe’s Home and Organic Garden at 117 Miller Road, Mount Tremper, NY.  It will be a POTLUCK, so please bring food made from your garden’s bounty and a beverage to share.  Melody said that you can bring a sample of your garden soil and any bugs or plants for identification for her to examine and comment upon.

Directions: Take 212 to the stop sign in Mt. Tremper.  Make a right , go over the bridge that goes over the Beaverkill and make the first right onto Miller Road.  Her cedar-sided house is the last house on the left

WGS initiates Conflict Resolution Role Plays

On Monday, July 28,  2014 Working Group Support practiced a conflict resolution model patterned loosely around debate guidelines.  We have titled this; Model A.  An important feature of this structure is giving each person a limited time to state their perspective on the conflict and then asking the listener to reflect back what they have heard before speaking their own perspective.  This communication guideline was popularized 25 years ago when Stephen Covey published his hugely popular book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.”

WGS will be continuing to practice various models of conflict resolution in an attempt to distill a simple but powerful method to offer to Woodstock Transition for conflict resolution.  Stay tuned…..

11th Annual Film and Discussion Series / Event 1

The Woodstock Film & Discussion Series will launch its 11th Annual Season on Monday  January 30th at 7pm. The 11th season will begin with a virtual screening of the stirring, award-winning film “Seeding Change: The Power of Conscious Commerce.”
