Garden Share Meeting – Nov.’18
Exciting news. Starting November 1st, there will be a new composting program at the Saugerties Transfer Station and we have as our guest speaker the woman running the program, Mary McNamara.
Mary McNamara, is co-founder of Sawkill Watershed Alliance and Lower Esopus Watershed Partnership, and on board of directors in water related organizations, Hudson River Watershed Alliance, Esopus Creek Conservancy, and chair of advisory board of Riverkeeper. As a volunteer have leveraged the voice of water and waterways as an important part of community policy and planning. Currently, Town of Saugerties, Organic Recycling Coordinator.
For a decade ran a multi-faceted family business, Parnassus Square. An earlier career was involved with art editing and cataloguing, in Taipei, and New York City. Received a B.A. in Political Science and East Asian Studies, University of Colorado; additional courses at SUNY Ulster in Water Chemistry and Environmental Studies.
Grew up in Texas near the gulf coast, after returning from four years in Asia, moved to NY, where eventually moved to the Catskills and the Hudson Valley that have been a natural fit, and a wonderful place to raise a family.
In my conversation with Mary, she made 2 things clear.1.
Kudos to our own WOW organizer and facilitator, Jo Yanow Schwartz, for being the driver behind the community composting movement in our area.2. Whether it succeeds or not, will depend upon the community’s participation. Even if you compost in your own backyard, there is an opportunity to save items that you can’t compost like bones, pizza boxes, meat, food soiled paper and shells, and bring it to the Saugerties Transfer Station.
The meeting will be on Wednesday, 11/7/18, at Toni Wiedenbacher’s home from 6-8 PM. It is a POTLUCK.

Garden Share Working Group May Meeting
The Garden Share Working Group’s next meeting is Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Toni Wiedenbacher’s Home and Garden form 6-8PM. It will be a POTLUCK.
Jill Emerson has been using her expertise working with Toni to convert her garden space into something really special. Below is the subject of the meeting from Jill.
“Only modern man would be so foolish as to make something that had only a single purpose – every element nature creates around us is rich with stacked functions. Perhaps this is one of many facets of our degraded relationship with Mother Earth, as single-function tools or spaces are inherently less sustainable. One of the single-minded approaches that we might hold toward our vegetable gardens is the idea of productivity being the sole virtue.
At the May Garden Share Meeting Toni and I will explore the spiritual resonance our gardens and outdoor spaces have for us, and how to honor and enhance this gift. With our commitment to mimicking nature’s stacked functions, we propose to explore this through: creating park-like open spaces that minimize lawn mowing; adding garden benches to encourage contemplation; creating beds that soak up and store water (mulched hugel kulture); the inclusion of edible native plantings outside of the fenced garden; plus the use of Feng Shui and dowsing in the landscape.”
Toni’s address is 297 Meads Mountain Road. From the village green you turn on to Rock City Road and go past the cemetery. Keep going until you cross Glasco Turnpike. The road now is now called Meads Mountain Road. Continue up the hill almost to the top where the K.T.D. Buddhist Monastery. Two blue flowered mailboxes on the left mark my driveway, which is shared with the Hausmans. As you turn into the driveway take a quick right to my house. My telephone number is 845-679-7281
